About the event

The Least Developed Countries Green Industrialization Facilitation Mechanism (LDC-GIF) will be launched at COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, in November 2026.

Led by Türkiye, with the United Nations Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries (UN Technology Bank) serving as its Secretariat, LDC-GIF is designed to help least developed countries (LDCs) access the technology, expertise, capacity and finance needed to advance green industrialization.

The mechanism responds to a key challenge facing many LDCs: while significant climate and development finance is available globally, many projects struggle to move from identified needs and early-stage ideas to well-prepared, investment-ready projects.

LDC-GIF aims to help bridge this gap by connecting country priorities with appropriate technologies, technical expertise, project development support and existing sources of finance.

Why green industrialization matters for LDCs

For LDCs, green industrialization can support economic diversification, productivity, job creation and resilience while helping countries pursue more sustainable development pathways.

However, LDCs face significant differences in infrastructure, industrial capacity, technology access and institutional capabilities. Support therefore needs to be country-led, demand-driven and tailored to national circumstances.

LDC-GIF will focus on facilitating practical cooperation and helping countries move from technology needs and project ideas towards implementation and investment.

A global facilitation mechanism

LDC-GIF is conceived as a facilitation platform, rather than a new stand-alone financing institution.

It will bring together:

  • Country needs and priorities
  • Green technologies and know-how
  • Technical and institutional capacity
  • Project preparation and maturation
  • Existing climate and development finance

The mechanism will also promote South-South and triangular cooperation, enabling countries and institutions to share technologies, expertise and practical experience.

The UN Technology Bank's Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs) will provide an important foundation for identifying country priorities and technology gaps. With TNAs completed in 16 LDCs and a further five underway, these assessments can help inform technology matching, capacity development and project development.

Building partnerships

The launch at COP31 will bring together LDC governments, Türkiye, UN entities, development and financial institutions, technology providers, research institutions, industry and other partners to build a global partnership for green industrialization.

The initial ambition is to develop a pipeline of green industrial projects and facilitate access to appropriate technical and financial partnerships during the mechanism's first three years.

LDC-GIF seeks to turn country priorities into practical projects, connect appropriate technologies with local needs, and help unlock investment for green industrialization in LDCs.
