The November Pogrom was orchestrated by the Nazi regime on 9 and 10 November 1938 against Jewish communities across Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. Jewish homes were ransacked, more than 1,000 synagogues were burned or damaged and thousands of Jewish-owned businesses were destroyed or looted. Some 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps. The Pogrom marked a radicalization of Nazi antisemitic policies and of state-led and state-sanctioned violence.
To mark the anniversary of the November 1938 Pogrom, historians Dr. Christoph Kreutzm¨¹ller and Dr. Rachel Perry will explore visual narratives of the Holocaust by examining depictions of the November Pogroms of 9-10 November 1938. Bringing photography and art into dialogue, the experts consider what these forms reveal about the lived realities of those depicted, the social interactions surrounding the violence, and the broader society in which it unfolded.
