12 August 2026 - What do a young entrepreneur in a small island community, a student in a landlocked country and a climate activist in a least developed country have in common? More than you might think. 

While their daily realities can look very different, young people everywhere share many of the same aspirations: quality education, decent work, good health, including mental health, a voice in decisions that affect their lives and the opportunity to build a better future. That idea is at the heart of this year's International Youth Day theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."  

For many young people in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), however, these aspirations can be harder to achieve. In SIDS, young people face some of the world's greatest climate risks, while many youth in LDCs and LLDCs continue to experience persistent poverty and limited access to resources. 

The  also highlights how unemployment, poverty, climate anxiety and insecurity can affect young people's well-being.  

Despite these challenges, youth are leading climate action initiatives, building social enterprises, creating digital solutions and strengthening their communities. Some of the most innovative responses to today's challenges are emerging from places with the fewest resources. 

This year's observance is built around three interconnected ideas. Global solidarity reminds us that creating opportunities for young people is a shared responsibility requiring international cooperation and equitable access to resources. Shared challenges recognizes that issues such as education, employment, climate change, digital inclusion and mental well-being affect young people everywhere. Youth innovation celebrates the remarkable ways young people respond to these challenges. 

UN DESA advances youth-inclusive policies, supports the World Programme of Action for Youth, convenes the ECOSOC Youth Forum and amplifies youth voices in global decision-making, such as through the UN Youth Delegate Programme. 

International Youth Day reminds us that while young people live in different contexts, their hopes for dignity, opportunity and well-being are shared. Investing in those aspirations is one of the smartest investments the world can make.
