Meet the Author Event: Sandy Walker, Artist
Join artist Sandy Walker in a conversation about the work of Tamiki Hara, with Jaqueline Cabasso, Executive Director of Western States Legal, moderated by Tsutomu (Tom) Kono, Fellow, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).
My Deepest Desire by Tamiki Hara draws in part on the author¡¯s experience living through the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and his fervent wish for peace. Renowned visual artist Sandy Walker came across Hara¡¯s poetry, which conflates the loss of Tamaki¡¯s wife before the bombing with the experience of the bombing and its aftermath as he struggled to make sense of life. Walker was so deeply moved by Hara¡¯s writings that he resolved to make an artwork around it. In conjunction with 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the 1970 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) here at UNHQ, Walker and Cabasso will discuss the enduring influence of Hara¡¯s writing. His final work stands as a prescient warning. Today, the growing dangers of wars among nuclear-armed states are palpable and intolerable.
