The General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
The 2026 theme, ¡°Forests and economies,¡± highlights the essential role forests play in driving economic prosperity. Beyond providing income, jobs, and renewable raw materials, forests sustain family and community agriculture, enhance productivity, and safeguard healthy watersheds.
As countries move toward a sustainable bioeconomy, forest products offer nature-based alternatives to carbon-intensive materials while generating new opportunities. Forests remain indispensable for healthy economies today and for future generations.
People around the world are encouraged to participate in local, national, and international forest-related activities, such as tree planting campaigns. Forests support agriculture, protect watersheds, store carbon, and strengthen community resilience. As nations embrace greener economies, forest products provide vital low-carbon solutions that create economic value while protecting ecosystems. Healthy forests strengthen resilience, reduce poverty, and promote long-term environmental and economic stability.
The UN Postal Administration's three new stamps highlight the vital role forests play across communities and industries:
-
$1.70 ¨C Forests advance sustainable development by providing livelihoods and income while supporting biodiversity. They supply food, clean air, and fresh water, and help regulate climate by storing carbon.
-
CHF 1,90 ¨C Forests support jobs and drive economic growth across forestry, agriculture, ecotourism, and non?timber forest products. They offer essential sources of medicine, nutrition, and food security, especially for rural and indigenous communities.
-
€1,45 ¨C Forests promote sustainable development through forestry, agriculture, and forest-based industries. They support local economies while maintaining ecosystems essential for daily life.
The stamps were illustrated and designed by Sergio Baradat (USA).
