{"id":301595,"date":"2024-09-20T16:53:21","date_gmt":"2024-09-20T20:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=301595"},"modified":"2024-09-20T16:53:21","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T20:53:21","slug":"unrwa-philippe-lazzarini-statement-20sep24","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/unrwa-philippe-lazzarini-statement-20sep24\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaza: Too many of our staff are being killed as our buildings are attacked &#8211; Statement from Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>20 September 2024<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">Gaza<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">: too many of our staff are being killed as our buildings are attacked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">At the same time, <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">UNRWA <\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">continues to be the target of a barrage of misinformation &amp; disinformation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">This includes attempts of justifying the killing of staff by labeling them operatives of armed groups like Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"> Such horrific claims, made publicly, are not backed by evidence &amp; are dangerous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Most importantly, they instigate fear among our humanitarian frontline workers in Gaza. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Several colleagues told us they no longer feel safe to put on the UNRWA vest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Their children are begging them not to go to work fearing they might be killed while in UNRWA buildings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">The misinformation attacks are not about the neutrality of <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">UNRWA<\/span><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"> or our humanitarian workers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">They aim at: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Creating distraction from the atrocities of this war<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Dehumanization by rendering the unbearable justifiable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Undermining &amp; eliminating UNRWA, the largest humanitarian provider in Gaza including for food, shelter and health care. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Everyone has a responsibility to control the spread of inaccurate or malicious information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">Before sharing, check the facts to avoid the trap of putting the lives of others at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; 20 September 2024 Gaza: too many of our staff are being killed as our buildings are attacked.
