<\/p>\n

  GENEVA,  26 March  (UNCTAD, UNIDO)  —  The  United Nations  Conference on
\nTrade and  Development (UNCTAD)  and United  Nations Industrial  Development
\nOrganization  (UNIDO)  have   forged  a  new  strategic  alliance  to  boost
\ninvestment in developing countries. A  memorandum of understanding to ensure
\ncost effectiveness and optimal  use of official  development assistance  was
\nsigned  in Geneva  today by  UNCTAD  Secretary-General Rubens  Ricupero  and
\nUNIDO Director-General Carlos Magarinos.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  The alliance  harnesses the two  organizations' comparative advantages  to
\nmaximize  delivery of  services and  avoid  duplication,  as part  of United
\nNations efforts to pool the resources of its agencies.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  While  UNIDO will  focus on  advice  and  assistance on  industrial sector
\nissues  and  investment  and  technology  promotion  support,  UNCTAD   will
\nconcentrate on policy  issues affecting investment promotion, including  the
\nregulatory and institutional  framework for  investment. These  arrangements
\nwill  also  include  the  formation  of  new  partnerships  between  the two
\norganizations and the private sector of industry.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  Joint  activities  will  take  place  at  the  country  and  global level.
\nSelected  from where UNIDO  or UNCTAD  is currently  involved in investment-
\nrelated  activities,  the initial  target countries\/regions  are Bangladesh,
\nBolivia,  Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic  Republic of the
\nCongo, Ecuador,  Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia,  Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau,
\nIndonesia,   Mali,   Madagascar,   Mozambique,   Morocco,  Namibia,   Nepal,
\nNicaragua, Niger, Pakistan, Peru,  Senegal, Togo, Uganda  and Uzbekistan, as
\nwell  as the Palestinian  Authority and  West African  Economic and Monetary
\nUnion. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  Both agencies  will strengthen  their support  for the  activities of  the
\nWorld Association of Investment  Promotion Agencies, which was set up at  an
\ninternational meeting under UNCTAD's auspices in April 1995.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  Areas for  cooperation include  preparation of  investment policy  reviews
\nand   guides;  development   of   regulatory   frameworks  for   investment;
\norganization  of investment and technology  forums and business  gatherings;<\/p>\n

and promotion of technological innovation.<\/p>\n
