The agenda was adopted.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

2. IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF ARAB REFUGEE PROPERTY: REPORT BY MR. JOHN BERNCASTLE<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Commission heard a report by Mr. John Berncastle regarding the possibilities of accelerating the Commission’s work on the identification and valuation of Arab property abandoned in Israel. Mr. Berncastle concluded that such an acceleration was feasible and that the whole identification work could be completed within a period of eighteen months. The programme would involve a total staff of twenty-six persons, operating under an estimated budget of approximately $150,000.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Commission decided<\/i> to refer the matter to their respective Governments and at the same time to consult with the Secretary-General as to the necessary arrangements for putting such a programme into effect.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

3. LETTER DATED 25 MAY 1955 FROM THE ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY TO THE COMMISSION’S REPRESENTATIVE IN JERUSALEM<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Commission decided<\/i> that it could take no position on the question raised by Mr. Carver’s letter without further information; the Chairman accordingly requested Miss Flynn (UNRWA) to seek clarification from Beirut.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

4. ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE ACTING PRINCIPAL SECRETARY<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Mr. CHAI<\/u> (Acting Principal Secretary) announced that owing to the pressure of other duties he had asked to be relieved of his assignment as Acting Principal Secretary of the Commission. After thanking the members of the Commission for their co-operation and friendship, he introduced Mr. Bang-Jensen, who was to succeed him as Acting Principal Secretary.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Commission welcomed Mr. Bang-Jensen and paid tribute to Mr. Chai, expressing their regret at his departure.<\/p><\/div>\n
