USAID and the Ministry of Planning sign an agreement to empower the Palestinian youth<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Ramallah, WEST BANK –<\/strong> The Ministry of Planning and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) signed Wednesday a memorandum of understanding for a program to increase the learning and earning opportunities of the Palestinian youth. The USAID Deputy Mission Director David Harden, the Deputy Minister of Planning Dr. Sameeh Al Abed, and Dr. Cairo Arafat attended the signing event. <\/p><\/div>\n

In October 2005, the United States Government awarded the Educational Development Center (EDC) a grant to implement Ruwwad, the Palestinian Youth Empowerment Program, which was consolidated in the agreement between USAID and the Ministry of Planning. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The five-year program will help thousands of young Palestinians to gain skills and knowledge that prepare them for active and productive roles in the society. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Ruwwad will engage the youth in a number of activities, such as apprenticeships and internships, complementary education opportunities, youth recreation programs, secondary school civic service programs, national youth policy development and media outreach activities. The long-term goal of the program is to inspire and equip the young Palestinians to act as agents of positive change in the society. <\/p><\/div>\n

The program will be implemented by the Academy for Educational Development (AED), East Jerusalem YMCA, Youth Build, National Youth Employment Coalition (NYEC), together with EDC. <\/p><\/div>\n

Since 1993, Palestinians have received more than $1.7 billion in U.S. economic assistance via USAID projects – more than from any other donor country. <\/p><\/div>\n
