The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Mahamat Zene Cherif (Chad):<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Security Council expressed their sorrow at the death of Palestinian Minister Ziad Abu Ein, which occurred after a demonstration in the Palestinian village of Turmus Ayya.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the family of Minister Abu Ein, the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Security Council encouraged the parties to ensure that a swift and transparent investigation is undertaken.  Council members took note of the willingness of the Government of Israel to conduct a joint investigation into the incident.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The members of the Security Council called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and to refrain from steps that could further destabilize the situation.<\/p><\/div>\n
