<strong>ANNAN DEPLORES LOSS OF PALESTINIAN LIFE IN GAZA ATTACK<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/sg\/sgstats.asp?nid=116\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;released late Thursday afternoon, the Secretary-General deplored the attacks in Gaza yesterday by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in which at least six Palestinians were killed. <br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">He was especially disturbed that the IDF fired tank rounds and heavy machine gun fire at two schools, one of which belonged to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>UNRWA<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">). <br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">In the statement, the Secretary-General once again called on the Government of Israel to halt such military actions in heavily populated areas and live up to its obligations under international humanitarian law to take special care to protect civilians, as well as to ensure the security of United Nations installations. \n<\/li>\n<li style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">He also reiterated his appeal to both sides to stop all acts of violence and provocation, as called for by the Security Council.\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align:left;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">Today, UNRWA sent an assessment team to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/unrwa\/refugees\/gaza\/rafah.html\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><u>Rafah<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;to look at the damage caused by the fighting.&#160;Initial reports suggest that 20 refugee shelters, which are home to 39 families, were damaged to such an extent that they are now uninhabitable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOON BRIEFING BY HUA JIANG DEPUTY SPOKESMAN FOR THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS UN HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK Friday, October 18, 2002 &#8230;. &#160;
