BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Longstanding restrictions on the movement of people and goods to and from Gaza have undermined the living conditions of 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza. Many of the current restrictions, originally imposed by Israel in the early 1990s, were intensified after June 2007, following the Hamas takeover of Gaza and the imposition of a blockade. These restrictions have reduced access to livelihoods, essential services and housing, disrupted family life, and undermined people's hopes for a secure and prosperous future. The situation has been compounded by the restrictions imposed since June 2013 by the Egyptian authorities at Rafah Crossing, which had become the main crossing point used by palestinian passengers in the Gaza Strip, given the above restrictions on the Israeli- controlled crossings.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n

MOVEMENT AND ACCESS OF PEOPLE*<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

EREZ CROSSING <\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>In August 2015, Erez crossing was open for 26 days during daytime (8:00 – 19:00).<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>The number of crossings through Erez slightly declined compared to the previous two months, but it remained well above the equivalent figures during 2014 and the first quarter of 2015.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Accessible only to permit holders, primarily medical and other humanitarian cases, merchants, and aid workers.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Permits issued by Israeli authorities. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n

\n
\n

RAFAH CROSSING<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>In August 2015, Rafah was open for 4 out of 31 scheduled days. Access into Egypt was allowed only for medical cases, dual nationals, foreign residency card holders and students.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Since 24 October 2014, the crossing has been closed for all but 29 days, reportedly as a result of insecurity in the Sinai.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>The closure of the crossing is affecting at least 30,000 Palestinians registered to cross through.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

MOVEMENT OF GOODS FROM AND INTO GAZA<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

EXIT OF GOODS<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Kerem Shalom operated on 21 out of 26 scheduled days for exit of goods from Gaza.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>102 truckloads of goods were allowed to exit Gaza in August:<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>45 truckloads destined to West Bank markets, the majority of which consisted of agricultural products, and the rest education related items, furniture and clothes.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>29 truckloads of agricultural products destined to Israeli markets.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>28 truckloads of agricultural products to international markets.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Opens during daytime (08:00 – 19:00).<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n

ENTRY OF GOODS<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Kerem Shalom operated on 22 out of 26 scheduled days for entry of goods into Gaza.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>9,063 truckloads of goods entered Gaza through Kerem Shalom in August, the highest such volume ever recorded through this crossing.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Imports in August represent 73% of the volume of goods which entered prior to the imposition of the Gaza blockade in June 2007.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>26% of the truckloads were aid supplies and designated for aid agencies.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>The number of truckloads carrying basic construction materials (2,984) more than doubled compared to the monthly average (1450) since the beginning of 2015.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>90 truckloads of basic construction materials entered via Rafah for the private sector.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span> <\/span>Karni, Sufa and Nahal Oz crossings have remained closed.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Kerem Shalom was the only crossing available for the import of fuel, allowing the entry of:<\/p><\/div>\n

•<\/span>  <\/span>17.6 million liters of petrol & diesel.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span>  <\/span>8.7 million liters of industrial fuel for the Gaza Power Plant.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

•<\/span>  <\/span>5,603 tons of cooking gas.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

<\/p>\n
