40 Request for the admission of Palestine to UNESCO<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

After considering this item, the Executive Board adopted the following decision, by a vote taken by roll-call, with 40 votes in favour, 4 votes against and 14 abstentions, the United States of America voting against; details of the vote are annexed to the summary record of the sixth plenary meeting of the session.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Executive Board,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

1. Considering the request for the admission of Palestine to UNESCO submitted in 1989, and reiterated at each General Conference,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

2. Having noted that Palestine accepts UNESCO’s Constitution and is ready to fulfil the obligations which will devolve upon it by virtue of its admission and to contribute towards the expenses of the Organization,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

3. Noting that the status of Palestine is the subject of ongoing deliberations at the United Nations in New York,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

4. Considering Article II, paragraph 2, of UNESCO’s Constitution, which stipulates that: “… States not members of the United Nations Organization may be admitted to membership of the Organization, upon recommendation of the Executive Board, by a two-thirds majority vote of the General Conference<\/i>”,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

5. Recommends that the General Conference admit Palestine as a member of UNESCO.<\/p><\/div>\n
