EVACUATION DEADLINE IN JERUSALEM WAITS FINAL AGREEMENT TERMS<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

(The following has been received at UN Headquarters from the UN Press Officer in Haifa.)<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>Evacuation of the neutral zone around the Red Cross area in Jerusalem was not effected by noon 30 August as planned, because the Egyptian, Arab Legion and Jewish local commanders has not received final agreement terms from their respective governments.  United Nations observers however expect no difficulty in establishing time and methods of withdrawal once the final terms are received by all parties concerned.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The following details were revealed concerning the shooting at UN observers during the last 10 days while on their way or while waiting to check Tel Aviv-Jerusalem convoys at Evrayut in the Latrun area by Arab Legion forces on 23 August and by Jews on 24 and 29 August.  In Jerusalem a convoy of the three white jeeps carrying 12 UN observers was shot at by forces of the Arab Legion in the vicinity of the Mandelbaum Gate on 29 August.  In the El Malha sector an unidentified sniper fired at an observers' jeep on 30 August.  However no one was hit in any of these incidents.  The United Nations has complained to the respective authorities.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>In Jerusalem the situation remains unchanged and there is the usual sporadic mortar, rifle and machinegun fire from both sides.<\/p><\/div>\n
