  {"id":202965,"date":"2011-10-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=202965"},"modified":"2019-03-12T18:28:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:28:34","slug":"auto-insert-202965","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-202965\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO General Conference admits Palestine as UNESCO Member State &#8211; UNESCO press release"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>General Conference admits Palestine as UNESCO Member State<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>UNESCO&#8217;s General Conference today voted to admit Palestine as a Member State of the Organization.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;padding-top:9px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/images\/0012\/001255\/125590e.pdf#page=21\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\"><u>For its membership to take effect*, Palestine must sign and ratify UNESCO&#8217;s Constitution<\/u><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">&nbsp;which is open for signature in the archives of the Government of the United Kingdom in London. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Palestine&#8217;s entry will bring the number of UNESCO&#8217;s Member States to 195. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The vote was carried by<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>107 votes in favour of admission and 14 votes against, with 52 abstentions. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">Admission to UNESCO for states that are not members of the United Nations requires a recommendation by the Organization&#8217;s Executive Board and a two thirds majority vote in favour by the General Conference of Member States present and voting (abstentions are not considered as votes). <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The General Conference consists of the representatives of the States Members of the Organization. It meets every two years, and is attended by Member States and Associate Members, together with observers for non-Member States, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Each Member State has one vote, irrespective of its size or the extent of its contribution to the budget. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The General Conference determines the policies and the main lines of work of the Organization. Its duty is to set the programmes and the budget of UNESCO.
