With regard to the Middle East, yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Israeli and Arab war. This is a sombre reminder that four decades later, there is still no peace in the region. I have made the Middle East a priority and in the first few months of my tenure as Secretary-General, I have visited the region already several times and I am going to make another visit later this month. The people of the region are continuing to experience hardship and suffering, and there is an urgent need to find a political solution.  In Lebanon, a peacekeeping operation – in which Spain participates in large numbers – has restored a fragile peace in the country.  It is incumbent on the international community to help the peoples of the region find a political solution, and the renewed efforts of the Quartet as well as the Arab Peace Initiative afford opportunities that must be seized.<\/p><\/div>\n
