CIDA and UNDP Sign a $7 Million Agreement<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

In Support of the Justice System in the oPt<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Jerusalem, May 5th, 2010 <\/strong><\/i>– Demonstrating their strong commitment to the improvement of rule of law in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) made a 7 million Canadian Dollars (approximately USD 6.9 million) contribution to the UNDP programme titled Supporting the Rule of Law and Access to Justice for the Palestinian People over a period of three years. On 30 March 2010, the agreement was signed between CIDA and UNDP.<\/p><\/div>\n

The purpose of the programme is to contribute to the development of a sustainable, fair and independent justice system in the oPt. The partnership with CIDA will focus on supporting the institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Justice, promoting gender and juvenile justice and enhancing the confidence among stakeholders in the justice system.<\/p><\/div>\n

Acknowledging the significance of upholding the rule of law in people’s daily lives, it is recognized that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has been improving the living conditions of its people, particularly, for the better administration of justice. Against this backdrop, UNDP’s continued cooperation with the PA, bilateral partners such as CIDA and civil society intends to be of further assistance to achieving enhanced public confidence in the justice system as well as strengthened institutional capacity to administer justice. All these efforts are expected to contribute to building an independent Palestinian state that is peaceful, just, stable, rule-bound and firmly anchored on principles of the rule of law and human rights.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
