SECRETARY-GENERAL WARMLY WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF UN DEMOCRACY FUND<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

GRANTS TOTALLY $36 MILLION<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The United Nations Democracy Fund today announced its first beneficiaries, awarding grants totalling $36 million to 125 projects selected from around the world.  The grants were selected from over 1,300 proposals and range from projects aimed at promoting civic education to voter registration, democratic dialogue and access to information.  Over 60 per cent of recommended recipients are civil society organizations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the announcement and believes that the initial response from applicants is powerful evidence of the strong demand for support from the United Nations for this very important agenda.  He calls on all Members States to support the Democracy Fund and use it as an innovative and flexible mechanism for advancing the United Nations democracy agenda.<\/p><\/div>\n

The translation process of UNCAC provisions will involve a number of activities that mainly aims at determining the required changes in current Legal Framework, regulations and policies. The project will also work on mobilizing civil society organizations; through workshops, rallies, meetings and promotional material in order to push forward the development of the anti-corruption National Action Plan for combating Corruption in Palestinian Society. <\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Youth Rights Monitor<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Youth Monitor aims at enhancing leadership qualities and skills of young Palestinians to act as observers and monitors to their rights on the legislative and executive levels. The cadre will be trained and educated the democratic process with a focus on youth rights legislation and implementation. They will disseminate information and awareness to their peers’ rights and constructive role through awareness-raising workshops, and through youth media.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
