UNDP Removes Quarter Million Tons of Rubble in Gaza<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Gaza, 07 May 2015<\/strong> – A quarter of a million tons of rubble have been removed by UNDP’s Rubble and Debris Removal project in the Gaza Strip has removed since the beginning of 2015, generating over 9,669 workdays. Rubble was removed from 270 locations and buildings enabling the reconstruction to begin in different areas of Shujayia, Gaza City, Middle Area, Rafah and Khan Younis.<\/p><\/div>\n

The project, which is funded by Sweden, Japan and USAID for USD 14 million, aims at removing one million tons of the rubble generated by the 2014 conflict in the Gaza Strip. Therefore, UNDP is moving rapidly in clearing the rubble in order to provide Gaza residents with access to basic services, reduce the risk of collapsing buildings and the threat of UXOs and other remnants of war. Once crushed, the rubble will be recycled and used for road rehabilitation in the Gaza Strip.<\/p><\/div>\n

As part of the awareness-raising component, UNDP also conducted five workshops in Beit Hanoun, Gaza City and Rafah to inform residents about the rubble removal project and answer their questions on the process. In addition, another workshop was conducted in cooperation with UN women on gender responsive in post-conflict rubble removal and women’s participation and inclusion in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.<\/p><\/div>\n

It is worth noting that the 51-day conflict has resulted in the destruction of over 18,000 housing units, leaving approximately 108,000 people homeless. UNDP’s response to the Gaza crisis includes enhancing livelihoods through emergency employment, rubble removal, repairing essential infrastructure, restoring solid waste services and providing institutional support towards a unified civil service and institutional harmonization.<\/p><\/div>\n
