Federal Foreign Minister Fischer on Syria's plans to withdraw its troops from Lebanon <\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

On 14 March 2005 Federal Foreign Minister Fischer issued the following statement on Syria's plans to withdraw its troops:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

"Syria's recent announcement concerning the withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon constitutes a step in the right direction.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Federal Government now awaits confirmation and realization of this announcement.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The complete and rapid implementation of UN Resolution 1559, passed last September, is the top priority. This is particularly crucial in view of the upcoming elections in Lebanon.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Federal Government acknowledges the commitment of the United Nations and fully supports the mission of UN Special Envoy Roed-Larsen.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
