The Palestinian economy will be boosted through a <\/span>new joint programme<\/a> involving six international agencies, UNCTAD's Deputy Secretary-General told the Trade and Development Board today.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Deputy Secretary-General Petko Draganov said the three-year programme, part of the UN Chief Executives Board cluster on trade and productive capacity, has three main goals:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t·\t<\/span><\/span>To contribute to the long-term development of the Palestinian economy.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t·\t<\/span><\/span>To enhance the institutional capacity of Palestinian economic institutions at the governmental and business levels.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t·\t<\/span><\/span>To strike a balance between traditional UN assistance focusing on humanitarian needs and assistance and the long-term strategic development objectives of the Palestinian economy.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

The project will be the latest example of the UN's "delivering as one" approach, in which "joint programmes are designed according to each country's needs," Mr. Draganov said. The three-year programme is being finalized and will be submitted to the Palestinian Authority in the next few weeks.<\/p><\/div>\n

In addition to UNCTAD, other participating agencies are the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Trade Centre (ITC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Labour Office (ILO). Following the Deputy Secretary-General's presentation, several speakers outlined the projects to be carried out by the participating agencies.<\/p><\/div>\n
