  {"id":194807,"date":"2010-06-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=194807"},"modified":"2019-03-12T16:53:12","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:53:12","slug":"auto-insert-194807","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-194807\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestinian Women Spread Breast Cancer Awareness in Yarmouk refugee camp &#8211; UNRWA article"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#0041c2;text-align:center;font-size:11pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Palestinian Women Spread Breast Cancer Awareness in Syria<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tSyria &#8212; A group of Palestinian women gathered at the UNRWA community centre in Yarmouk on 5 June to help combat one of Syria&#8217;s deadliest diseases: breast cancer.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tThey attended a seminar to raise awareness about the disease among women in Syria, held as part of UNRWA&#8217;s breast cancer awareness campaign, which launched in March this year.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tSeveral members of the Syrian Senology\/Breast Cancer Committee, including chairperson Dr Suheil Samaan and Dr Hala al-Kahhal, joined campaign trainees to educate women about the disease, early detection, and effective treatment.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#0041c2;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Survivor&#8217;s Vision Helps Others<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tDuring routine check-ups with Dr al-Kahhal in Damascus, Denise McArthur, a cancer survivor and volunteer with Australian Volunteers International, became alarmed when she learned the breast cancer statistics for women in Syria.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tShe said: &#8220;Breast cancer is the number one cancer killer among women in Syria. Seventy per cent of patients are diagnosed with it at an advanced stage.&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tDenise attributes her success in beating cancer to early detection. So with encouragement from Dr Samaan and Dr al-Kahhal, she devised plans to launch a breast cancer awareness programme.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tDenise said: &#8220;I knew I had to spread the word and help Syrian women. My past experiences presented me with a chance to make a difference &#8211; to save lives.&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#0041c2;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Breast Cancer Examinations<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tThe awareness seminar held in Yarmouk covered a vast array of issues, ranging from instructions for conducting self-breast exams to ways in which one can help a family member or loved one in their fight against the disease.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tThe film &#8220;Fatenah&#8221;, which details one Palestinian woman&#8217;s fight against cancer in the Gaza Strip, followed the presentations and question-and-answer session.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#0041c2;text-align:left;padding-top:9px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Spreading the Message<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tDenise has been an integral member of the campaign to raise awareness among women in Syria. Since March, 80 people have completed the programme, which teaches women to train others in conducting awareness seminars about breast cancer throughout the country.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tTraining and seminars have been conducted and will continue to be conducted in all Palestinian refugee camps throughout Syria, as well as at multiple UN organisations and embassies.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:4.5px;font-size:9pt;font-family:Verdana, san-serif;color:#000000;padding-bottom:4.5px;text-align:left;margin-left:20px;\">\n\t\t\t\tUNRWA&#8217;s breast cancer awareness campaign is made possible thanks in part to funding from Australian Volunteers International and the Planet Wheeler Foundation.
