  {"id":193548,"date":"2015-03-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=193548"},"modified":"2019-03-12T16:38:06","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T16:38:06","slug":"auto-insert-193548","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-193548\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria: Palestine Refugees &#8211; Humanitarian Snapshot, March 2015 &#8211; UNRWA infographic"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">\n<hr height=\"7px\" \/>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;color:#4040c2;padding-bottom:5px;text-align:left;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Syria: Palestine Refugees &#8211; Humanitarian Snapshot March 2015<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Yarmouk: <\/strong>On 5 March 2015, the Agency was able to resume food distribution for the first time since <strong>6 December 2014, <\/strong>from a new entry point established to the east of <strong>Yarmouk. <\/strong>Throughout March, the UNRWA was able to access Yarmouk on <strong>14 <\/strong>days, distributing a total of <strong>4,463 <\/strong>family food parcels and conducting <strong>1,191 <\/strong>health consultations at its temporary health point.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA Commissioner-General <strong>Pierre Krahenbuhl <\/strong>visited Yarmouk on <strong>10 March <\/strong>to meet with some of the <strong>18,000 <\/strong>Palestine refugees trapped in the area. In response to widespread deprivation and malnutrition among residents of Yarmouk, UNRWA calls for safe and continuous access to the area and other areas that remain hard to reach.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:5px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Humanitarian Response<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>CASH ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">The &#64257;rst distribution round of cash assistance in 2015 started on 18 January. By March 2015, the Agency provided 57,626 persons (14,406 families) with two months of cash assistance through 31 distribution points. Cash assistance is one of the most ef&#64257;cient forms of cash assistance, enabling refugee families to cover their basic needs such as food and rent.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>FOOD ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">In March, UNRWA distributed 28,273 food parcels to families via 15 distribution centers and collective centres in the Damascus area, Dera&#8217;a, Sweida, Neirab, Homs, Latakia and Aleppo. The Agency&#8217;s emergency food programme targets 460,000 Palestine refugees in Syria<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>HEALTH:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA provides health services to up to 480,000 Palestine refugees throughout Syria. In January and February this year, UNRWA health staff conducted 181,416 patient consultations in 14 health centers and 11 health points. The provision of primary health care services remains essential to combat the results of conflict, displacement and exhaustion of Palestine refugees.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>EDUCATION:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA upgraded eight teaching points to support children residing in collective centres. The teaching points will focus on providing supervised learning support using self-learning materials covering Mathematics, English, Arabic, French and Science. The Agency continues to provide primary education to over 45,000 Palestine refugee students in Syria in 48 UNRWA schools and 47 school buildings provided by the Ministry of Education.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>NON FOOD ITEM ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA distributed 1,114 blankets and 66 mattresses to collective centers Rif Damascus and the Syria Field Of&#64257;ce.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>ASSISTANCE TO COLLECTIVE CENTRES:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA is housing <strong>10,570 <\/strong>Palestine refugees and internally-displaced Syrians <strong>(2,657 <\/strong>families) in <strong>30 <\/strong>UNRWA and non-UNRWA managed temporary collective centers in Damascus and surrounding areas. In Aleppo, Latakia and Homs, UNRWA supports <strong>1,649 <\/strong>Palestine refugees and internally displaced Syrians <strong>(381 <\/strong>families). UNRWA shelters and UNRWA managed temporary shelters are home to <strong>145 <\/strong>newborn infants, <strong>197 <\/strong>persons with disabilities and one unaccompanied child. Refugees in shelters are provided with food assistance and non-food items, as well as regular health and social services. In addition, the Agency conducts regular maintenance of its WASH facilities.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>WATER SANITATION &amp; HYGIENE<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;padding-bottom:4px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Arial, san-serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">UNRWA distributed 3,463 hygiene kits to refugees in collective centers. Each hygiene kit contains soap, shampoo, disinfectant, washing detergent and other sanitary items to last a family of four for one month. The Agency was unable to distribute hygiene kits to refugees in Yarmouk in March. UNRWA conducts regular maintenance, garbage collection, plumbing and sanitation works in all accessible facilities, camps and gatherings.
