Development Times <\/i><\/span>issues publications aiming to analyse conditions relevant to Palestinian<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

development. The first few issues will be based on findings from recent large-scale public opinion surveys conducted for UNDP\/PAPP.<\/p><\/div>\n

Via <\/span>Development Times<\/i><\/span>, UNDP\/PAPP highlights critical issues through comprehensive snapshots. This first paper maps poverty<\/span> in the oPt.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Introduction<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is the first Millennium Development Goal set by the United Nations. Yet, midway between the year 2000, when these goals were agreed upon, and 2015, when they should be met, more Palestinians have become poor, their poverty deeper and, equally concerning, more Palestinians are at risk of falling into poverty.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Months after the UN announced its Millennium Development Goals in 2000, the second Intifada broke out in the oPt. Despite extensive humanitarian and developmental assistance, surveys conducted for UNDP\/PAPP in May 2007 show a widespread poverty rate, with a high proportion of extreme poverty. The findings are alarming, and if they are not addressed comprehensively, the sustainable livelihoods of Palestinians will be further undermined.<\/p><\/div>\n
