d&#8217;affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Kuwait to the United Nations, in his capacity as Chairman of the Group of Arab States for the month of July 2005, and on behalf of the States members of the League of Arab States, requested that an immediate meeting of the Security Council be convened to consider &#8220;the recent developments in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, in particular Israel&#8217;s continued and accelerated settlement activities, including the construction of its unlawful wall, as well as the dire situation on the ground&#8221;. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 5230th meeting, held on 21 July 2005, in response to that request. There was one suspension and one resumption of the meeting. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of Cuba, Egypt, India, Indonesia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia and Yemen, at their request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council&#8217;s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council&#8217;s provisional rules of procedure to Alvaro de Soto, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Personal Representative of the Secretary-General. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;In response to the request contained in a letter dated 20 July 2005 from the Charg&#233; d&#8217;affaires a.i. of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S\/2005\/472), the President, in accordance with the rules of procedure and the previous practice in that regard, invited the Charg&#233; d&#8217;affaires a.i. of the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to participate in the discussion. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;In response to the request contained in a letter dated 20 July 2005 from the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations (S\/2005\/471), the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council&#8217;s provisional rules of procedure to Yahya Mahmassani, Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States to the United Nations. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;In response to the request contained in a letter dated 20 July 2005 from the Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the President extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council&#8217;s provisional rules of procedure to Paul Badji, Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;In response to the request contained in a letter dated 20 July 2005 from the Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations (S\/2005\/473), the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council&#8217;s provisional rules of procedure to Syed Shahid Husain, Senior Adviser of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to the United Nations. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;The meeting was suspended.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:10px;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon the resumption of the meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Morocco and Pakistan, at their request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote. <\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;padding-top:8px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:8pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:10pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:center;padding-top:8px;font-size:8pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>&#8212;&#8211;<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary statement by the Secretary-General on matters of which the Security Council is seized and on the stage reached in their consideration&nbsp;
