1835 (LVI) Population questions<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Economic and Social Council,<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Having considered<\/i> the reports of the Population commission on its seventeenth session1<\/u>\/ and on its third special session,2<\/u>\/<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Takes note<\/i> with appreciation of these reports and commends the Population Commission for its work;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Endorses<\/i> the preparatory arrangements made for the World Population Conference, to be held at Bucharest from 19 to 30 August 1974, and expresses its appreciation to the government of the Socialist Republic of Romania and the Secretary-General of the conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span>Requests<\/i> the Secretary-General of the World Population conference, 1974, to invite representatives of the liberation movements now recognized by the Organization of African Unity and\/or by the League of Arab States to participate in the Conference without the right to vote;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>4.\t<\/span>Authorizes<\/i> the Secretary-General of the Conference, subject to the views expressed in the Council during the consideration of this question, to invite:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(a) the government of the Democratic Republic of Viet-Nam to take full part in the conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(b)  The government of Papua New Guinea to participate in the Conference as an observer;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(c)  The intergovernmental organizations listed in the report of the Population Commission on its third special session3<\/u>\/ and the regional development banks to be represented at the Conference by observers;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(d)  The interested specialized agencies and the international Atomic Energy Agency to be represented;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(e)   The non-governmental organizations listed in the report4<\/u>\/ and in the note by the Secretary-General5<\/u>\/ to be represented by observers;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>5.\t<\/span>Further authorizes<\/i> the Secretary-General of the conference to invite additional intergovernmental organizations and the non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council that may express the wish to be represented by observers at the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>6.\t<\/span>Considers<\/i> that the results of the conference will constitute an important contribution to the preparation for the special session of the General Assembly devoted to development and international economic cooperation called for in Assembly resolution 3172 (XXXVIII) of 17 December 1973, and thus to the Assembly itself;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>7.\t<\/span>Approves<\/i> as the provisional rules of procedure for the Conference the text of the revised preliminary draft of the rules of procedure, 6<\/u>\/ incorporating the amendments proposed by the Secretariat to rules 6, 10, 11, 12 and 14, as well as the annex on consensus recommended by the Population Commission;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>8.\t<\/span>Takes note<\/i> of the recommendation of the Population Commission that, in view of the timing of the world Population Conference, the eighteenth regular session of the commission should be rescheduled to take place in the early spring of 1975.<\/p><\/div>\n
