82.\t<\/span><\/span>Mr. SOUALEM<\/u><\/span> (Observer for Algeria) said that while access to economic, social and cultural rights had improved since the Commission’s previous session, progress had been minimal relative to the gains made from globalization by the world’s powers. In his report on the mission to the Occupied Palestinian Territories (<\/span>E\/CN.4\/2004\/10\/Add.2<\/a>), the Special Rapporteur on the right to food had demonstrated that poverty was on the increase, with the situation there on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) had therefore called a meeting in Geneva in June 2004.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

92.\t<\/span>Mr. AL-AJUMI<\/u> (Observer for Kuwait) said that the relevant report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food (E\/CN.4\/2004\/10\/Add.2) had confirmed that the majority of the violations of that right in the Occupied Palestinian Territories had been caused by the Israeli occupation, which should be terminated. While welcoming the report, his delegation remained concerned at the deterioration in nutrition and rising poverty levels as a result of the restrictions on humanitarian aid imposed by Israel, and Israel’s consequent violations of its obligations with regard to the right to food. He supported the recommendations in the report, particularly those in paragraph 62: Israel should respect its obligations under international humanitarian law, take immediate measures to end the Palestinian people’s humanitarian crisis and cooperate with the Special Rapporteur on the right to food. <\/p><\/div>\n
