SUMMARY STATEMENT BY THE SECRETARY-GENERAL ON MATTERS OF WHICH THE SECURITY COUNCIL IS SEIZED AND ON THE STAGE REACHED IN THEIR CONSIDERATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Addendum<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in documents S\/20370 of 11 January 1989 and S\/20370\/Add.16 of 2 May 1989.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>At its 2862nd meeting, on 30 May 1989, the Security Council resumed its consideration of the item, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for the period 18 November 1988 to 22 May 1989 (<\/span>S\/20651<\/a><\/a>).<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President drew attention to the draft resolution before the Security Council (S\/20656) which had been prepared in the course of the Council's consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council then voted on the draft resolution (S\/20656), and adopted it unanimously as resolution 633 (1989).<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Resolution 633 (1989) reads as follows:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>The Security Council<\/u>,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Having considered<\/u> the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Force, 1<\/u>\/\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Decides<\/u>:\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(a)\t<\/span>To call upon the parties concerned to implement immediately Security Council resolution 338 (1973) of 22 October 1973;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(b)\t<\/span>To renew the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force for another period of six months, that is, until 30 November 1989;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(c)\t<\/span>To request the Secretary-General to submit, at the end of this period, a report on the developments in the situation and the measures taken to implement resolution 338 (1973).\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\t<\/span>Following the voting, the President of the Security Council stated that, in connection with the resolution just adopted on the renewal of the mandate of UNDOF, he had been authorized to make the following complementary statement (<\/span>S\/20659<\/a>) on behalf of the Security Council:<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"As is known, the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S\/20651) states, in paragraph 24:  'Despite the present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached.'  That statement of the Secretary-General reflects the view of the Security Council."\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
