QUESTION OF PALESTINE<\/p><\/div>\n

Letter dated 29 October 1982 from the Chairman of the Committee on<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

addressed to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>As Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, I feel bound to express once again the Committee's deep distress at the recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank of the Jordan.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Press reports confirm that Isham Abu Musalem, a 15 year old Palestinian from the Balata refugee camp, was killed on 27 October 1982 by bullets fired by Israeli settlers.  Another Palestinian was seriously injured. A curfew was imposed on the Palestinian refugee camp after that incident and two schools in Nablus had to close down for a week.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It is reported in the press that protest demonstrations were organized following the murder of Isham Abu Musalem in most of the towns and refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian territories.  Israeli troops, it is reported, opened fire on demonstrators in a number of towns and the Israeli occupation authorities are now threatening to close down all schools on the West Bank of the Jordan in order to prevent the pupils from taking part in demonstrations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>These recent events are causing considerable concern to the Committee, which believes that Israel has embarked on a new wave of repressive measures against Palestinians living in the occupied territories.  Such action aggravates tensions and constitutes a constant threat to peace and security in the region.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I am again being urged to call for your good offices in taking immediate measures to protect the rights of Palestinians living in the occupied territories.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I should be grateful if you would have the text of this letter distributed as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 31, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
