31.\t<\/span><\/span>The situation of Palestinian and Israeli civilians, who lived in daily fear of terror and violence, was another example. That conflict could not be solved by military means. There must be a political solution based on Security Council resolutions <\/span>242 (1967)<\/a> and <\/span>338 (1973)<\/a> and on the principle of land for peace. Israel’s security needs must be fully respected and a democratic Palestinian State should be established and recognized. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

46.\t<\/span><\/span>It was important not to forget other important issues, such as the situation in the Middle East, the question of minorities and the fight against racism and racial discrimination. The international community would need to be united if the outcomes of the Durban Conference were to be implemented, and any policy of double standards must be rejected. The Commission had a role to play in that regard. Similarly, given the contradictory nature of the process of globalization, the main principles of the right to development must be formulated clearly. His delegation was also prepared to make suggestions concerning the integrity of the judicial system, an issue which the Commission should consider at its current session. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

47.\t<\/span><\/span>His Government was convinced that the protection of human rights could be a unifying factor in modern international relations. Without such unity, it would be difficult to achieve genuine progress in integrating human rights into all United Nations activities. <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
