ON MATTERS OF WHICH THE SECURITY COUNCIL IS SEIZED<\/p><\/div>\n

AND ON THE STAGE REACHED IN THEIR CONSIDERATION<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Addendum<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in document S\/18570 of  8 January 1987.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>During the week ending 26 December 1987, the Security Council took action on the following items:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council continued its consideration of the item at its 2777th meeting, held on 22 December 1987.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President drew attention to the revised text of the draft resolution (S\/19352\/Rev.1), submitted by Argentina, the Congo, Ghana, the United Arab Emirates and Zambia.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council then proceeded to vote on the revised draft resolution (S\/19352\/Rev.1), and adopted it by 14 votes in favour, to none against, with 1 abstention (the United States of America), as resolution 605 (1987).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Resolution 605 (1987) reads as follows:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/i>The Security Council<\/u>,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/i>Having considered<\/u> the letter dated 11 December 1987 from the Permanent Representative of Democratic Yemen to the United Nations, in  his capacity as Chairman of the Arab Group for the month of December, 1<\/u>\/\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Bearing in mind<\/u> the inalienable rights of all peoples recognized by  the Charter of the United Nations and proclaimed by the Universal  Declaration of Human Rights, 2<\/u>\/\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><\/span>Recalling<\/u><\/span> its relevant resolutions on the situation in the  Palestinian and other Arab territories, occupied by Israel since 1967,  including Jerusalem, and including its resolutions <\/span>446 (1979)<\/a>, <\/span>465  (1980)<\/a>, <\/span>497 (1981)<\/a> and <\/span>592 (1986)<\/a>,<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Recalling also<\/u> the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of 12 August 1949, 3<\/u>\/\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Gravely concerned<\/u> <\/u><\/i>and alarmed<\/u> by the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied by Israel since 1967,  including Jerusalem,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Taking into account<\/u> the need to consider measures for the impartial protection of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli  occupation,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Considering<\/u> that the current policies and practices of Israel, the occupying Power, in the occupied territories are bound to have grave consequences for the endeavours to achieve comprehensive, just and  lasting peace in the Middle East,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span> Strongly deplores<\/u> those policies and practices of Israel, the occupying Power, which violate the human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, and in particular the opening of fire by the Israeli army, resulting in the killing and wounding of defenceless Palestinian civilians;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Reaffirms<\/u> that the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of 12 August 1949, is applicable to the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied by Israel since 1967, including Jerusalem;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span>Calls once again upon<\/u> Israel, the occupying Power, to abide immediately and scrupulously by the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of 12 August 1949, and to desist forthwith from its policies and practices that are in violation of the provisions of the Convention;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>4.\t<\/span>Calls<\/u> furthermore for the exercise of the maximum restraint to contribute towards the establishment of peace;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>5.\t<\/span>Stresses<\/u> the urgent need to reach a just, durable and peaceful settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>6.\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> the Secretary-General to examine the present situation in the occupied territories by all means available to him, and to submit a report no later than 20 January 1988 containing his recommendations on ways and means for ensuring the safety and protection of the Palestinian civilians under Israeli occupation;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>7.\t<\/span>Decides<\/u> to keep the situation in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied by Israeli since 1967, including Jerusalem, under review.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
