Summary statement by the Secretary-General on matters of which<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

the Security Council is seized and on the stage reached in their consideration<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>Addendum<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in documents S\/2000\/40 of 15 February 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.1 of 21 February 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.5 of 28 March 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.8 of 14 April 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.9 of 19 April 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.15 of 23 May 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.28 of 31 July 2000, S\/2000\/40\/Add.39 of 13 October 2000 and S\/2000\/40\/Add.42 of 3 November 2000.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>During the week ending 11 November 2000, the Security Council took action on the following items:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t\t<\/span>The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question <\/strong><\/span>(<\/span>see <\/i>S\/2000\/40\/Add.39<\/a>)<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4217th and 4218th meetings, held in private on 10 November 2000, in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>At the close of the 4217th meeting, the following communiqué was issued by the Secretary-General in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Council:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“At its 4217th meeting, held in private on 10 November 2000, the Security Council considered the item entitled ‘The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question’.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, and with the consent of the Council, the President extended an invitation to His Excellency Mr. Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, President of the Palestinian Authority.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“The members of the Council and His Excellency President Yasser Arafat had a constructive discussion.”<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>At the close of the 4218th meeting, the following communiqué was issued by the Secretary-General in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Council:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“At its 4218th meeting, held in private on 10 November 2000, the Security Council considered the item entitled ‘The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question’.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Israel, at his request, to participate in the discussion of the item without the right to vote, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Charter and rule 37 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>“The members of the Council and the representative of Israel had a constructive discussion.”<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council met to consider the item at its 4219th meeting, held on 10 November 2000, in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Sadako Ogata, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.<\/p><\/div>\n
