Human rights situation in southern Lebanon and west Bekaa<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Note by the Secretary-General<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

1.\t<\/span>By its decision 1999\/288 of 30 July 1999, the Economic and Social Council took note of the report of the Commission on Human Rights 1<\/u>\/ containing Commission resolution 1999\/12 of 23 April 1999 on the human rights situation in southern Lebanon and west Bekaa.  In paragraph 6 of that resolution, the Commission requested the Secretary-General to bring the resolution to the attention of the Government of Israel, to invite the Government of Israel to provide information concerning the extent of its implementation, and to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-fourth session on the results of his efforts in that regard.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

2.\t<\/span>In view of the requests formulated in paragraph 6 of the resolution, the Secretary-General addressed a note verbale to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Israel on 28 June 1999.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

3.\t<\/span>No reply had been received at the time of the preparation of the present report.<\/p><\/div>\n
