RESOLUTION 1039 (1996)<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

Adopted by the Security Council at its 3622nd meeting<\/u><\/strong>,<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council<\/u>,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Recalling<\/u><\/span> its resolutions <\/span>425 (1978)<\/a> and <\/span>426 (1978)<\/a> of 19 March 1978, <\/span>501 (1982)<\/a> of 25 February 1982, <\/span>508 (1982)<\/a> of 5 June 1982, <\/span>509 (1982)<\/a> of 6 June 1982 and <\/span>520 (1982)<\/a> of 17 September 1982, as well as all its resolutions on the situation in Lebanon,<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Having studied<\/u><\/span> the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon of 22 January 1996 (<\/span>S\/1996\/45<\/a>) and taking note of the observations expressed therein,<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Taking note<\/u><\/span> of the letter dated 17 January 1996 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General (<\/span>S\/1996\/34<\/a>),<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Responding<\/u> to the request of the Government of Lebanon,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Decides<\/u> to extend the present mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon for a further period of six months, that is until 31 July 1996;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Reiterates<\/u> its strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Lebanon within its internationally recognized boundaries;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span><\/span>Re-emphasizes<\/u><\/span> the terms of reference and general guidelines of the Force as stated in the report of the Secretary-General of 19 March 1978 (<\/span>S\/12611<\/a>), approved by resolution 426 (1978), and calls upon all parties concerned to cooperate fully with the Force for the full implementation of its mandate;<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>4.\t<\/span>Reiterates<\/u> that the Force should fully implement its mandate as defined in resolutions 425 (1978), 426 (1978) and all other relevant resolutions;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>5.\t<\/span>Condemns<\/u> all acts of violence committed in particular against the Force and urges<\/u> the parties to put an end to them;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>6.\t<\/span>Welcomes<\/u> the streamlining of the Force described in paragraph 16 of the report of the Secretary-General of 22 January 1996, to be completed by May 1996, and stresses<\/u> the need to continue efforts to achieve further savings by rationalizing the administrative and support services of the Force, provided they do not affect its operational capacity;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>7.\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> the Secretary-General to continue consultations with the Government of Lebanon and other parties directly concerned with the implementation of the present resolution and to report to the Security Council thereon.<\/p><\/div>\n
