Summary statement by the Secretary-General on matters of
\nwhich the Security Council is seized and on the stage reached
\nin their consideration<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

   Addendum<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in documents S\/2002\/30 of 15 March 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.1 of 22 March 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.2 of 25 March 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.3 of 26 March 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.5 of 1 April 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.13 of 9 April 2002, S\/2002\/30\/Add.23 of 21 June 2002 and S\/2002\/30\/Add.27 of 19 July 2002. <\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>During the week ending 3 August 2002, the Security Council took action on the following items:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The situation in Georgia<\/strong> (see<\/i> S\/23370\/Add.40; S\/25070\/Add.4, 26, 27, 31, 34, 37, 42, 44, 45 and 51; S\/1994\/20\/Add.4, 8, 9, 11, 13, 25, 28 and 47; S\/1995\/40\/Add.1, 10, 18 and 32; S\/1996\/15\/Add.1, 16, 27 and 42; S\/1997\/40\/Add.4, 18, 30 and 44; S\/1998\/44\/Add.4, 21, 30 and 47; S\/1999\/25\/Add.3, 17, 29 and 44; S\/2000\/40\/Add.4, 18, 29 and 45; S\/2001\/15\/Add.5, 12, 17, 31 and 44; and S\/2002\/30\/Add.4; see also <\/i>S\/2002\/30\/Add.3 and 29)<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4590th (private) and 4591st meetings, held on 29 July 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General concerning the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia (S\/2002\/742).<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>At the close of the 4590th meeting, in accordance with rule 55 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the following communiqué was issued through the Secretary-General in place of a verbatim record:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t  “At its 4590th meeting, held in private on 29 July 2002, the Security Council considered the item entitled ‘The situation in Georgia’.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t  “In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Charter and rule 37 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure, the President invited the Minister for Special Affairs of Georgia.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t  “The members of the Council and the Minister for Special Affairs of Georgia had a constructive discussion.”\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n

\t<\/span>At the 4591st meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Georgia, at his request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S\/2002\/845) that had been prepared in the course of the Council’s prior consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S\/2002\/845, and adopted it unanimously as resolution 1427 (2002) (for the text, see S\/RES\/1427 (2002); to be issued in Official Records of the Security Council, Fifty-seventh Year, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 2002<\/i>).<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4592nd meeting, held on 30 July 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (S\/2002\/779). <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of Albania, Denmark, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Yugoslavia, at their request, to participate in the discussion without the right to vote. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Michael Steiner, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Kosovo and Head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. <\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 4593rd meeting, held on 30 July 2002 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (S\/2002\/746).<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S\/2002\/846) submitted by France.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S\/2002\/846, and adopted it unanimously as resolution 1428 (2002) (for the text, see S\/RES\/1428 (2002); to be issued in Official Records of the Security Council, Fifty-seventh Year, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 2002<\/i>).<\/p><\/div>\n
