57.   One of the greatest achievements of the United Nations had been the liberation of scores of countries from colonization and foreign occupation, although the initiative had generally come from the peoples concerned themselves. Action taken in pursuit of self-determination could not be termed terrorism. Similarly, in waging war against international terrorism, States must respect the principles of international humanitarian law and the Charter of the United Nations. Israel, which ignored those principles on a daily basis with its incursions into Palestine and the Syrian Golan, was guilty of the most arrant double standards when it termed its actions “self-defence” and those of the Palestinian people “terrorism”. <\/p><\/div>\n
