font-size:smaller\">\t<\/span><u>Mr. BEN-DOV<\/u>&nbsp;(Israel) recalled that the General Assembly at its thirty-sixth session had unanimously adopted a declaration calling for the elimination of all forms of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief, and regretted that that declaration had had little influence on the Syrian authorities&#39; treatment of the Jewish communities in that country.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those communities, numbering about 4,000, were to all intents and purposes held as hostages by the authorities, who applied measures of control, intimidation and repression against them.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">27.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre; font-size:smaller\">\t<\/span>A number of innocent Syrian Jews had been held in Syrian jails under harsh conditions after being subjected to cruel interrogations and protracted torture.&nbsp;&nbsp;Emigration by Jews was strictly prohibited in flagrant violation of various human rights instruments.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some Syrian Jews had been authorized to go to the United States of America, but only on condition that their children be left behind in Syria.&nbsp;&nbsp;That meant that they were held hostage, and was in violation of an elementary right, recognized throughout the world, namely, the right of children to live with their parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;Only a small number of unmarried Jewish women had been allowed to go abroad, and even then only on payment of large sums of money.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jews were also subjected to other restrictions, including limitations on the sale or purchase of real estate and access to public office.&nbsp;&nbsp;The delegation of Israel appealed to the Government of syria to lift all the restrictions on Syrian Jews and resolve that humanitarian issue without delay.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:left;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\">28.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre;
