37.   Mr. Kanaan<\/strong> (Observer for Palestine) said that the food and health situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, had become catastrophic as a result of the strangulation policies implemented by the Government of Israel. Over 75 per cent of the population of the Gaza Strip were currently dependent on food aid. He asked what the legal implications were for an occupying Power when it denied the occupied people access to food and what responsibility the United Nations and the international community had to guarantee that people’s right to food. <\/p><\/div>\n

49.   He shared the views of the Observer for Palestine concerning the effects of the Israeli occupation and the confinement of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and paid tribute to the courageous efforts of Palestinian and Israeli non-governmental organizations that were working side by side to address Palestinians’ needs. <\/p><\/div>\n
