Iraq to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to enclose herewith a message addressed to Your Excellency from His Excellency Dr. Saadoon Hammadi Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>I would kindly request that this message be circulated as an official document <\/strong>of the General Assembly, under items 24 and 25 of the preliminary list, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

Message dated 22 March 1979 from the Minister for<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Foreign Affairs of Iraq to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I wish to refer to the grave situation in the Middle East resulting from the intention of President Mohammed Anwar Al Sadat to arrive in Washington to sign the Peace Treaty with Israel and to emphasize that such step will doubtless threaten security and peace in the region and expose it to the perils of armed conflict.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>An act such as this is plainly against the Arab States whose territories are occupied by Israel and against the will of the Palestinian people, who are primarily concerned.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It is also against the will of the Arab States as, expressed by the Ninth Arab Summit Conference a<\/u>\/ held at Baghdad last November after the Camp David accords.  We are confident that the step which President Sadat intends to take will not meet with success.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The United States of America in the first place, bears responsibility for the dire consequences, since the efforts exerted by it towards achieving this step run counter to the interests of the Arab Nation and its legitimate national aspirations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>They also run counter to the interests and rights of the Palestinian people themselves, who were supported by all peace-loving States and by the resolutions of the United Nations and numerous other international organizations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>While informing you of the foregoing we feel fully confident that, inspired by the great responsibility you shoulder by virtue of your high office and by your keenness on the prevalence of peace, security and justice throughout the world in conformity with the provisions of the United Nations Charter, you will draw the attention of the entire international community to the gravity of this step and its dire consequences and will exert every effort to prevent its implementation.<\/p><\/div>\n
