41.   As a number of delegations had pointed out, 16 Territories and millions of people remained under colonial rule; however, it must also be remembered that several more million people were still suffering under foreign occupation and were denied the exercise of their right to self-determination and independence. The Palestinian people, in particular, whose territory was occupied, were victims of the most brutal crimes; the Security Council had shown itself to be incapable of protecting them and the international community remained silent. <\/p><\/div>\n

45.   The people of Palestine also deserved to live in an independent state side by side with Israel.
