56\/142.   The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The General Assembly,<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Aware <\/i>that the development of friendly relations among nations, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, is among the purposes and principles of the United Nations, as defined in the Charter,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Recalling <\/i><\/span>the International Covenants on Human Rights,<\/span>1<\/sup><\/span> the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span> the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples<\/span>3<\/sup><\/span> and the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights on 25 June 1993,<\/span>4<\/sup><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Recalling also <\/i><\/span>the Declaration on the Occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the United Nations,<\/span>5<\/sup><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span><\/span>Recalling further <\/i><\/span>the United Nations Millennium <\/span>Declaration<\/a>,<\/span>6<\/sup><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Expressing hope <\/i>for an immediate resumption of negotiations within the Middle East peace process on its agreed basis and for the speedy achievement of a final settlement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Affirming <\/i>the right of all States in the region to live in peace within secure and internationally recognized borders,<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>Reaffirms <\/i>the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to their independent State;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>Expresses the hope <\/i>that the Palestinian people will soon be exercising their right to self-determination, which is not subject to any veto, in the current peace process;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span>Urges<\/i> all States and the specialized agencies and the organizations of the United Nations system to continue to support and assist the Palestinian people in their quest for self-determination.<\/p><\/div>\n
