1840 (LVI). Preparations for the World Food Conference<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Economic and Social Council,<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Recalling<\/i> General Assembly resolution 3180 (XXVIII) of 17 December 1973 in which the Assembly decided to convene a World Food Conference at Rome in November 1974,<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Having considered and taken note<\/i> of the report of the Preparatory Committee of the World Food Conference on its first session,1<\/u>\/<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Taking note<\/i> of the report of the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations entitled "Appraisal of prospective food deficits and food aid needs" 2\/<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1. Decides<\/i> to convene the World Food Conference from 5 to 16 November 1974;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

2. Requests<\/i> the Secretary-General to invite:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(a) All States3<\/u>\/ to participate in the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(b) The representatives of the liberation movements now recognized by the Organization of African Unity and\/or by the League of Arab States to participate in the Conference without the right to vote;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(c) The interested organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to participate in the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(d)<\/i> Other interested intergovernmental organizations to be represented by observers;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(e) Non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council or with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to send observers to the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

(f) Other non-governmental organizations which might have a specific contribution to make to the work of the Conference to send observers to the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

3. Urges<\/i> the Preparatory Committee of the World Food Conference at its second session to complete the draft provisional agenda for the Conference and the discussion of the other questions listed in paragraph 2 of the report of the Committee on its first session;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

4. Recommends<\/i> that the period allocated to the second session of the Preparatory Committee should be extended, if necessary, for the completion of the tasks assigned to it in paragraph 3 above;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

5. Requests<\/i> the Secretary-General to make available as early as possible all relevant documentation, so that a comprehensive and in-depth consideration of the progress of the preparatory work as well as of the scope of the Conference can be made by the Economic and Social Council at its fifty-seventh session;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

6. Expresses its appreciation<\/i> for the efforts being made by the Secretary-General of the World Food Conference in order to ensure maximum support for the Conference;<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

7. Expresses its belief<\/i> that the results of the World Food Conference will constitute an important contribution to the preparations for the special session of the General Assembly devoted to development and inter-national economic cooperation called for in General Assembly resolution 3172 (XXVIII), of 17 December 1973, and thus to the Assembly itself.<\/p><\/div>\n
