\t<\/span>1.\t<\/span>The second special session of the General Assembly, at its 131st meeting held on 19 April 1948, referred to the First Committee for consideration and report, the item "Further consideration of the question of the future government of Palestine".<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>2.\t<\/span>In the course of the general debate on this question in the First Committee, which began on 20 April 1948, the representative of France submitted, at the 121st meeting held on 22 April 1948, a draft resolution (A\/C.1\/280) stating that the maintenance of order and security in Jerusalem was an urgent question, and that the Trusteeship Council should be asked to study and, in consultation with the Mandatory Power and the interested parties, take suitable measures for the protection of the city and its inhabitants.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>3.\t<\/span>At the 123rd meeting, the Committee decided to give special priority to the consideration of the French draft resolution and adjourned the general debate for that purpose.  An amendment to the French resolution (A\/C.1\/281), submitted by the representative of Sweden and accepted by the representative of France, was circulated on 23 April 1948.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>4.\t<\/span>At the 124th meeting of the First Committee held 26 April 1948, an amendment submitted by the representative of Australia (A\/C.1\/282) to the effect that the task outlined in the amended French resolution should be undertaken by a sub-committee established by the First Committee, was rejected by 26 votes against, 20 in favour and 7 abstentions.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>An amendment introduced at the same meeting by the representative of Czechoslovakia, which added at the beginning of the amended version of the French resolution a phrase reading, "Pursuant to the General Assembly's resolution of 29 November 1947," was rejected by 39 votes against, 5 in favour and 9 abstentions.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>The French resolution, as amended by the delegation of Sweden, was adopted by 44 votes to 3 with 6 abstentions.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>5.\t<\/span>The First Committee, therefore, recommends to the General Assembly the adoption of the following resolution:<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t"FURTHER CONSIDERATION OF THE FUTURE\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tGOVERNMENT OF PALESTINE\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"The General Assembly,<\/i>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"Considering<\/i> that the maintenance of order and security in Jerusalem is an urgent question which concerns the United Nations as a whole,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"Resolves<\/i> to ask the Trusteeship Council to study with the Mandatory Power and the interested parties suitable measures for the protection of the city and its inhabitants, and to submit within the shortest possible time proposals to the\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
\n\t\t\t\tGeneral Assembly to that effect."\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
