Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.<\/p><\/div>\n

At its 2502nd meeting, held on 2 November 1983, the Security Council resumed its consideration of the item, having before it the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) for the period 21 May to 21 November 1983 (S\/16169).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The President called attention to a draft resolution before the Council (S\/16187) which had been prepared in the course of the Council's consultations.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

The Security Council then voted on the draft resolution (S\/16187) and adopted it by 15 votes in favour to none against as resolution 543 (1983).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Resolution 543 (1983) reads as follows:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>The Security Council<\/u>,\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Having considered<\/u> the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S\/16169),\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Decides<\/u>:\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(a)\t<\/span>To call upon the parties concerned to implement immediately Security Council resolution 338 (1973) of 22 October 1973;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(b)\t<\/span>To renew the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force for another period of six months, that is, until 31 May 1984;\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>(c)\t<\/span>To request the Secretary-General to submit, at the end of this period, a report on the developments in the situation and the measures taken to implement Security Council resolution 338 (1973).\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>Following the voting, the President made the following complementary statement (S\/16188) on behalf of the Security Council regarding the resolution just adopted:\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>"As is known, the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (S\/16169) states, in paragraph 26: `Despite the present quiet in the Israel-Syria sector, the situation in the Middle East as a whole continues to be potentially dangerous and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached.'  That statement of the Secretary-General reflects the view of the Security Council."\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
