7 October 2024, New York: Today, the UN Palestinian Rights Committee Chair, Ambassador Cheikh Niang issued the following statement on Committee’s official (previously known as Twitter).:
One year after the tragic events that claimed over 1,200 lives in Israel, which I strongly condemned, and the devastating consequences of the disproportionate response in Gaza, where over 41,000¡ªprimarily women and children¡ªhave perished, it is clear that a ceasefire is urgently needed. As the UN Secretary-General has underscored, the situation in Gaza and the West Bank is dangerously destabilizing the region. This violence must cease. I urge an immediate halt of all hostilities, the release of all hostages, unrestricted humanitarian access, and an end to Israel¡¯s occupation of Palestinian territories, including Gaza. The path to peace depends on it.
