The 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference or Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the (UNCBD COP16) will take place from 21 October - 1 November 2024 in Cali, Colombia.
COP16 will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15 in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada. At COP16, governments will be tasked with reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Parties to the Convention are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilization for the Global Biodiversity Framework.
COP16 will be held under the slogan "Peace with Nature”, which is a call for reflection to improve the relationship we have with the environment, to rethink an economic model that does not prioritize the extraction, overexploitation and pollution of nature.
The UN Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC) and UNDP with support from the Climate Security Mechanism are convening a CBD COP16 side-event entitled “South-South dialogues: Protecting biodiversity and building peace: experiences from Asia, Africa and Latin America” on 29 October 2024 (12:30pm – 2:30pm local time, Blue zone / UN Pavilion Colombia / Centro de Eventos Valle del Pacifico). The event will aim to identify best practices and lessons learned for building peace, promote inclusion, and address socioenvironmental and land conflicts, drawing on experiences from Colombia, Guatemala, Liberia and the Philippines. This will be an opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and make peace with nature.
